The problem

Why you cannot just borrow a car

An “I” condition means you may drive only a vehicle fitted with an approved ignition interlock, and that rule does not pause for a road test. DriveTest inspects the vehicle before the examiner gets in. Most people discover this in the week before the appointment, then find there are exactly three places to look and none of them work.

Rental companies

None of them fit interlocks, and none will let you fit one to their vehicle. It is not a service that exists at a rental counter.

The approved device providers

Smart Start and ALCOLOCK lease devices, not cars. They install on a vehicle you already own, which is no help if the problem is the vehicle.

A friend or partner’s car

Understandably few people hand over the keys for a driving test — and Ontario can charge a vehicle owner who knowingly lets someone drive without the device.

That gap is the whole reason this service exists.

The penalty

What DriveTest does if the car is wrong

DriveTest publishes the conditions that make a road test “out of order”. This is their own framing, not ours.

If your test is declared out-of-order, you lose 50% of your road test fee. The other 50% remains as a credit on your driving record and may be applied when booking a new test. This applies to a vehicle you own and to a vehicle you have borrowed (parent, friend, or driving instructor) or rented.

One thing people are always surprised by

DriveTest does not allow passengers during a road test. Your instructor waits in the car park while you drive with the examiner. That is why the practice hour beforehand matters so much — it is the only coaching you get.

Test day

How the morning runs

A 9:00 am slot, hour by hour. The only part with any drama in it takes about ninety seconds.

08:00 — we meet you

Same car you will test in, in the DriveTest car park. Paperwork is four minutes: licence, the conditions printed on it, and the class of test.

08:15 — the device

Fresh mouthpiece, then you blow. We deliberately trigger a rolling retest while parked, so the first time that alarm sounds is not mid-test.

08:35 — the test roads

Twenty minutes on the streets around the centre. Parallel park somewhere real, three-point turn, find the mirror you have stopped checking.

09:00 — the vehicle check, then the test

The examiner inspects the car, we step out, and you drive. Afterwards we take the car and you get on with your day.

They are not interchangeable. Canotek runs G2 and G road tests only; Walkley runs every licence class and is the only Ottawa centre with Saturday road test appointments.

By arrangement. As of September 2026 we could not find a driving school in any of those four cities advertising an interlock-equipped car for a road test, which is why people make the drive. Put the ten hours and the road test into the same weekend and it becomes one trip. Every area we take an interlock test car in Eastern Ontario is listed with its drive time.

The equipment

Four things about the device that catch people out

A handset on a coiled cable, about the size of a TV remote. All four get practised in the hour before your test.

The mouthpiece

Disposable, and a fresh one goes on for every session and every booking.

The breath sample

The device won’t start the car above a 0.02 BAC preset limit, and it wants a steady hum-and-blow rather than a hard puff. Most people fail their first two attempts on technique alone.

Rolling retests

MTO describes it as being prompted to pull over and give a breath sample while the vehicle is running. Miss one and the device warns you, records it, and sets off lights and horn until you switch off — it does not cut the engine.

Lockouts, cold starts and the 60-day download

Mouthwash and some medications can leave mouth alcohol that reads; rinse with water and wait 10–15 minutes. Every 60 days you return to the provider so they can download the data and calibrate the unit.

You might not need a road test at all

This service only helps people who actually have a road test to sit. Check how long your licence was invalid before you ask us for anything — it is the only thing that decides the answer.

1–3 yrs: Eye test only — no road test. A first conviction carries a minimum one-year suspension, so most first-time drivers land here.
3–10 yrs: Knowledge test, eye test and two road tests, with no mandatory waiting between them. This is who we are for.
10+ yrs: You reapply as a new driver and serve every graduated licensing waiting period. No fast-tracking.

Questions

About the car specifically

Can I use my own car if the device is already fitted?

Yes, and you should — you will not need us for the vehicle. Your own car has to meet every other DriveTest requirement too: valid insurance and plates, working lights, horn, brakes, seatbelts and mirrors, and no warning lights showing. If you would still like the practice hour or the ten-hour course, book those on their own.

Does the interlock in your car report to my provider?

No. The unit in our vehicle is ours, on our own service schedule. It has nothing to do with the device leased to you by Smart Start or ALCOLOCK, and nothing you do in our car appears in your monitoring record.

What if I fail the breath sample at the centre?

There are two different outcomes and the distinction is worth knowing. If you cannot provide an acceptable sample, DriveTest cancels the test and you lose 50% of the fee. If the device will not accept a valid sample — a fault on its side, at the start or during a rolling retest — DriveTest reschedules you free of charge.

Can my instructor sit in during the test?

No. DriveTest declares a test out of order if there are passengers in the vehicle, so the instructor waits in the car park. Everything they can usefully tell you happens in the hour beforehand.

What happens if DriveTest cancels my appointment?

We rebook you at no charge. Their cancellation is not your problem and it is not going to cost you a second booking fee with us.

Do I need the training course as well?

Not necessarily. If you have been driving on a device for months and the rolling retests no longer startle you, the car and the warm-up hour may be all you need. If you have never used one, or you have not driven in years, the ten-hour ignition interlock training course is what turns test day into an ordinary morning.
