Who is eligible, and who is excluded

The general test: your licence is suspended for one or three years for an alcohol-impaired conviction, and you are a first- or second-time offender under the Highway Traffic Act.

You are excluded if any of the following apply.

• The offence involved drugs, or drugs plus alcohol. This is an alcohol-only programme.
• There is a conviction where bodily harm or death was caused.
• A drive-while-disqualified conviction within five years as a first-time offender, or ten years as a second-time offender.
• A court order denying interlock authorisation during the prohibition.
• You already had an interlock condition on the date of the offence.
• A previous reduction to ten years of an indefinite suspension.

Before you can enter, you also need to be reinstated from any other suspensions, have paid all outstanding fees and penalties, and have every other prohibition expired or removed.

The two application components

There are only two, and neither of them is a driving course.

1. The assessment component of Back on Track — roughly a one-hour interview.
2. A signed lease agreement with Smart Start Canada or ALCOLOCK Canada.

First-time offenders in Stream A or B only need the assessment completed within the suspension period, but they must still go on to finish the Education or Treatment workshop and the six-month Follow-Up afterwards. It is deferred, not waived.

There is no driving-school role in this programme

We are a driving school and we want to be straight about this: nothing we sell moves you into a stream, shortens a suspension, or forms part of your application. The two components are an assessment run through remedial.net and a lease signed with an approved device provider. That is the whole list.

If a driving school implies otherwise, ask them which of those two components they provide.

Violations that remove you from the programme entirely

Removal is not an extension. It means the full original suspension and the full interlock period, with credit only for suspension already served.

• Failure to install within 30 days of conditional reinstatement
• Unauthorised de-installation
• Tampering
• Driving a vehicle without an approved device
• Missing an appointment with your provider
• A subsequent Criminal Code driving conviction

Performance failures during the interlock period

Blowing over the preset 0.02 limit or missing a rolling retest is a performance failure. First-time convicted offenders are monitored in the last three months and a failure adds three months; subsequent convictions are monitored in the last six months and a failure adds six. An administrative roadside sanction at any point adds three months from the current expiry.

What the streams do not change about a road test

This is where people get their hopes up, so plainly: the stream you are in has no effect on whether you need a road test. That is decided by how long your licence was invalid.

Stream A gets a first-time offender back on the road in three months, which lands well inside the one-to-three-year band — and in that band Ontario requires an eye test and nothing more.
