What Gatineau drivers need to know

Both Ottawa DriveTest centres are French-designated. Ask when you book if you would rather sit the test in French. We work in English and French too.
Quebec is a separate programme
The SAAQ runs Quebec’s antidémarreur programme under its own rules. If your licence is Quebec-issued, we are not the right people and we will say so on the phone.
Check which province issued your licence
It sounds obvious and it is the first thing we ask. Plenty of people live on one side of the river and are licensed on the other. Ontario conditions, Ontario DriveTest, Ontario interlock programme — all three have to line up before any of this is relevant to you.

How the day runs
Test morning, from Gatineau
From Hull it is the Macdonald-Cartier or the Portage bridge and then south. From the Gatineau sector or Masson-Angers, Canotek is the shorter run across.
Give yourself more time than the map suggests. Bridge traffic between eight and nine is the variable that ruins otherwise well-planned mornings, and DriveTest will not hold a slot for someone stuck on the Alexandra. We are at the centre regardless; it is your arrival, not ours, that the appointment depends on.
The car itself is the same everywhere: certified interlock, insured for a road test, unmarked, automatic, fresh mouthpiece. The full specification is on the road-test car page.
You might not need a road test at all
Before you book anything from Gatineau, check how long your licence was invalid. It is the only thing that decides whether a road test is required at all, and we would rather tell you now than take a booking you do not need.
- 1–3 yrs
- Eye test only — no road test. A first conviction carries a minimum one-year suspension, so most first-time drivers land here.
- 3–10 yrs
- Knowledge test, eye test and two road tests, with no mandatory waiting between them. This is who we are for.
- 10+ yrs
- You reapply as a new driver and serve every graduated licensing waiting period. No fast-tracking.

My licence is Ontario but I live in Hull. Is that fine?
Yes. What matters is which province issued the licence, not where you sleep. Ontario licence, Ontario DriveTest, Ontario interlock rules.
How much time should I leave for the bridges?
More than the map says. Bridge traffic between eight and nine is what ruins otherwise well-planned mornings, and DriveTest will not hold your slot.
I live in Gatineau with a Quebec licence. Can you help?
No. Quebec’s ignition interlock programme is administered by the SAAQ and is separate from Ontario’s in its rules, its devices and its testing. We work only with Ontario licences and Ontario DriveTest centres.
Can I take the road test in French?
Both Ottawa centres are French-designated, so yes — say so when you book with DriveTest. Our own instruction is available in English or French.
