Walkley or Canotek: which Ottawa centre to book

The one difference that cancels appointments

Canotek Road runs G2 and G road tests only. Walkley Road handles every licence class. If you need anything other than a passenger road test, Walkley is the answer.

Saturdays exist at exactly one of them

Walkley is the only Ottawa centre offering Saturday road test appointments. That is why its queue is consistently longer, and why the Saturday slots go first. If taking a weekday off costs you a shift, plan several weeks ahead rather than hoping.

Canotek runs Monday to Friday. For anyone in the east end that is usually fine, and the weekday queue is shorter.

Where they are, and what that means from each part of the city

• Canotek Road, east Ottawa — about 8 minutes from Place d’Orléans, and 3.8 km from our own door on Montreal Road.
• Walkley Road, south Ottawa — about 15 minutes from Centrepointe and 22 minutes up Greenbank from Barrhaven.
• From Kanata or Stittsville, both work out at roughly the same distance, so book whichever has the earlier date.

The routes are genuinely different

Walkley handles more licence classes, so its examiner pool is larger and the routes vary more. Canotek’s routes use the industrial grid around Canotek Road and the residential streets off Innes. Neither is harder; they reward different practice, which is why the practice hour happens at the centre you are actually booked at rather than near your house.

If your licence carries an “I”

Neither centre supplies vehicles — DriveTest states plainly that DriveTest Centres do not provide vehicles, and that the car may be owned, borrowed or rented. What it must be is matched to the conditions on your licence. A licence with an “I” and a car without a device is on the out-of-order list, and so is the reverse.

The G2 road test with an ignition interlock covers what the examiner checks, and we rent a car with an interlock for the road test at both centres as standard.

A local detail worth knowing

ALCOLOCK lists an Ottawa service centre at 5340 Canotek Road — the same road as the Canotek DriveTest centre. If a 60-day calibration falls near your test date, that is a convenient coincidence.
