Why the vehicle matters
DriveTest can cancel your test before it starts
Their published vehicle requirements list the conditions that make a road test “out of order”. Three concern interlocks, and only one gets you a free reschedule.
Device fitted, no “I” on licence
It works the other way too. The vehicle and the conditions printed on your licence have to match each other exactly.
The device won’t take a sample
If the unit faults at the start or during a rolling retest, DriveTest reschedules free of charge. If you can’t give a clean sample, the forfeit stands.

At drivetest.ca or 1-888-570-6110. We are not a booking agent and we will not claim to move you up the queue.

Send us the date
Date, centre and class of test. We confirm availability and quote it in writing, usually the same day.

Training, if you want it
Ten hours, or a shorter refresher. Most people take it the day before so the device is fresh in the hands.

Test day
We meet you an hour early, warm up on the test roads, and hand over a car that passes the vehicle check.

The equipment
Four things about the device that catch people out
A handset on a coiled cable, about the size of a TV remote. All four get practised in the hour before your test.

The mouthpiece
Disposable, and a fresh one goes on for every session and every booking.

The breath sample
The device won’t start the car above a 0.02 BAC preset limit, and it wants a steady hum-and-blow rather than a hard puff. Most people fail their first two attempts on technique alone.

Rolling retests
MTO describes it as being prompted to pull over and give a breath sample while the vehicle is running. Miss one and the device warns you, records it, and sets off lights and horn until you switch off — it does not cut the engine.

Lockouts, cold starts and the 60-day download
Mouthwash and some medications can leave mouth alcohol that reads; rinse with water and wait 10–15 minutes. Every 60 days you return to the provider so they can download the data and calibrate the unit.
How we handle it
Nobody here needs the story
You’ll be asked for your test date, your licence class and the conditions printed on the card. That is the whole intake. We don’t ask what happened, your name goes on no windscreen, and the car carries no school signage on the doors.
Our instructors are MTO-licensed and have taken hundreds of people through this. The tone in the car is the same one you’d get renewing a passport.

You might not need a road test at all
Before you book anything, check how long your licence was invalid. It is the only thing that decides whether a road test is required, and we would rather tell you now.
- 1–3 yrs
- Eye test only — no road test. A first conviction carries a minimum one-year suspension, so most first-time drivers land here.
- 3–10 yrs
- Knowledge test, eye test and two road tests, with no mandatory waiting between them. This is who we are for.
- 10+ yrs
- You reapply as a new driver and serve every graduated licensing waiting period. No fast-tracking.

Ottawa first, Eastern Ontario by arrangement
Most clients drive to us on Montreal Road, then test at Walkley or Canotek. Out-of-town clients usually put the training and the test into a single trip.
Coming in from out of town?
As of September 2026 we could not find a single driving school in Kingston, Cornwall, Brockville or Pembroke advertising an interlock-equipped car for a road test, which is why people make the drive. Book the ten hours and the road test into the same weekend and it becomes one trip.
Gatineau residents: this applies only if you hold an Ontario licence. Quebec runs its own programme through the SAAQ, and DriveTest cannot test a Quebec licence.
Questions
What people ask on the phone
Can you fit a device to my own car?
No. Installation in Ontario is done by two approved providers, Smart Start Canada and ALCOLOCK Canada. You lease the unit from one of them and they fit and service it.
We are a driving school. We teach you to use the device, and we rent a car that already has one in it. If you have reached us looking for an install, the providers are who you want and we will not waste your time pretending otherwise.
Can you find me an earlier DriveTest slot?
No, and be careful with anyone who says they can. We have no arrangement with DriveTest — you book your own test at drivetest.ca or 1-888-570-6110. The Ministry of Transportation publicly cautions against third-party booking sites and resellers.
Do I even need a road test?
Only if your licence was invalid for three years or more. Under three years it is an eye test and nothing else, which is where a first conviction usually lands. Tell us your dates and we will place you honestly rather than take a booking you do not need.
What happens if I turn up in a car without a device?
The test is declared out of order before you drive. You forfeit 50% of the road test fee; the other 50% stays as a credit on your driving record and can be applied when you rebook. Then you wait for another date.
Will anyone at the centre know why I am there?
The car carries no driving-school signage — no roof sign, nothing on the doors. Your name is not on a windscreen or any clipboard someone could read. We do not ask what happened, and we never will.
Why is there no price on this page?
Because it depends on how many road tests you need, whether the training goes with the car, which centre you are at and how far out the date is. Rather than post a figure that is wrong for most people, we quote each booking and send it in writing, usually the same day. There is no deposit to ask.
